Bone Protein Osteocalcin Also Important to Blood Sugar

When we pass on scientific experiments from animal studies we are careful because they do not often turn out the same in humans. However, a recent study from Columbia University Medical Center conducted with mice revealed how important the bone compound osteocalcin is to the endocrine system.

Osteocalcin signals the pancreas to create more insulin. It also signals fat cells to release the valuable compound adiponectin.

The Columbia University scientists point out, "People with type 2 diabetes have been shown to have low osteocalcin levels, suggesting that altering the activity of this molecule could be an effective therapy."

As the research goes forward, it may reveal how we can improve skeletal health, and maintain a healthy endocrine system.
